Woods Up

Woods Up

Woods Up measures soil moisture in forest areas that need to be replanted. This can be used to determine when and where the area is too dry and needs to be irrigated.

Motivation

Due to climate change, Germany is also struggling with higher temperatures and, above all, drier summers and springs. Forests in particular are suffering. Due to the drought, the trees can no longer produce resin and thus can no longer protect themselves from pests such as the bark beetle.

Yet pests are only one of the problems why forests are dying. Areas that have become bare have to be replanted. In most cases, young trees are planted in the area that have been grown in tree nurseries for up to five years.

Planting takes place either in late autumn or in spring. Once the young trees are planted, they depend on a sufficient water supply for the first three to four years. If it is too dry, the trees die and the area has to be replanted.

For about a year now, there have therefore been subsidies in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria for watering such regeneration areas. The decision as to whether the area should be irrigated lies with the responsible forester. As of today, this decision is based on the forester's experience and assessments. For this, the forester has to drive to the respective area and manually check the soil for dryness.

Advantages through Woods Up

With Woods Up, the forester can manage his area from the very beginning. Through the app, the area can be drawn in and the planting can be fully planned. The forester can order the sensors for his area via the application. These are installed in the area without any additional work for the forester. Once the sensors are in the area, the forester can track the current moisture levels via the app. In addition, he is warned of excessive dryness and can react immediately. Because the sensors are distributed at different hotspots in the area, they can also make statements about whether only part of the area needs to be watered. Woods Up thus not only tells the forester when the area should be irrigated, but also ensures more efficient use of the resource water.

The Result

Because the sensors are distributed at different hotspots in the area, they can also make statements about whether only part of the area needs to be irrigated. Woods Up thus not only tells the forester when the area should be irrigated, but also ensures more efficient use of the resource water.
